ITINERARY
Day 1: Individual arriving to Lucca
Day 2: Lucca countryside 59 km (or 36 km) – altitude 330 m (or 150 m)
Embark on a picturesque journey through the enchanting Lucca countryside, offering a delightful taste of rural beauty before reaching the seaside. Our specially curated route spans 59 km for those seeking a more immersive experience or a shorter 36 km option, both with altitudes of 330 m and 150 m respectively.
As you pedal along local roads less traveled by tourists, you’ll be treated to the charm of medieval hamlets, quaint parish churches, and the rustic allure of wineries, small farms, and historic oil mills. This region is renowned for producing the famed extra virgin olive oil D.O.P. of Lucca and exquisite DOC wines.
The first part of the tour not only allows you to soak in the pure countryside ambiance but also provides an opportunity to explore the historic city of Lucca itself. Immerse yourself in the city’s rich history and indulge in its culinary specialties.
For your convenience, our base in Lucca offers direct support, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience. We’ve designed two itineraries to cater to different preferences: a leisurely 36 km route and a more challenging 59 km route that extends to Montecarlo. Whichever you choose, you’ll have the chance to discover the best this area has to offer.
Day 3: Lucca – Viareggio 52 km – altitude 150 m
We leave Lucca in the morning, when streets and typical shops look more lively and bright. Leaving the city centre you will pass by an old Carthusian monastery and Nozzano, an ancient hamlet maintaining its original aspect and fortifications, to reach Massaciuccoli park, on Massaciuccoli lake, after a country uphill road.
From the short hill you will have an enchanting view of the park , the coast and the sea on the horizon. From here to Viareggio, Marina di Pietrasanta and Versilia beaches it’s a pleasant biking in a totally different landscape ending along the famous Versilia promenade where a bike way will guide you all along the coast.
Day 4: Viareggio- Tirrenia 49 km – altitude flat
Leaving the “Versilia” promenade, one of the most famous in Tuscany you will cross the small town of Viareggio, known as resort for famous people, for its Carnival and for the production of yachts and luxurious boats entering ia a completely different scenery…less trendy shops and more wild nature…the sandy paths through the Natural Park of “Migliarino – San Rossore- Massaciuccoli”, typical for its sweet-smelling pinewoods and sand dunes ending on the sea, Torre del Lago Puccini, and then again along the Serchio river path.
The tour will take you to Tirrenia for the night.
Day 5: Tirrenia – Quercianella, Distance km. 46, altitude m, 360
Explore the Charm of Ciclabile del Trammino: A Scenic Cycling Adventure
Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Ciclabile del Trammino, a delightful cycle path tracing the historic route of an old railway. Follow the path along the enchanting Arno River, meandering toward its mouth until you reach the coastal haven of Marina di Pisa. Here, seamlessly transition to the waterfront cycle path, treating yourself to panoramic views of the coastline and the charming city of Livorno.
Indulge your senses with the invigorating scents of the Mediterranean scrub that accompanies you throughout the journey. After a swift exploration of the historic center, including the picturesque Bella Venezia district, pedal your way to the captivating Livorno seafront.
Upon reaching Ardenza, the choice is yours. Embark on a scenic journey along the bustling seafront road, offering breathtaking views of the Tuscan Archipelago and cliffs adorned with hidden coves. Alternatively, opt for the Via del Santuario di Montenero—a panoramic ascent of approximately 300 meters, surrounded by lush greenery. This scenic route is followed by a gentle descent to Quercianella. The choice is yours, and the adventure awaits!
Day 6: Quercianella – Castagneto Carducci, distance: 51 km, altitude m. 280
You’ll start your tour southwards always along the seaside: you will enjoy the cycling on natural bike paths inside the centenarian pinewoods, arriving up to several lovely sandy beaches: “The White – Beaches of Vada”, the “Mazzanta”, the “Marina di Cecina”…since the climate in this part of Tuscany is very pleasant also in Spring and Autumn, you will have the chance to stop and relax on the sand, enjoying the typical quiet of early/late season and going for a swim in the sea when sun still brights high.
Day 7: Bolgheri wine roads – distance: 35 km, altitude: 200m
Indulge in a Wine Lover’s Paradise: Cycling the Wineroad of the Etruscan Coast
Embark on the fourth leg of your holiday, a serene escape into the picturesque countryside. The proximity to the sea ensures a pleasantly mild terrain, making the journey suitable for cyclists of all levels. Traverse the renowned “Wineroad of the Etruscan Coast,” leading you to the charming towns of Bibbona, Bolgheri, and Castagneto Carducci.
This region is the heart of SuperTuscan wine production, home to iconic labels like Sassicaia and Ornellaia. As you pedal through the vineyard-draped landscape, take the opportunity to visit numerous wineries along the way. Day 8: Individual departure
After enjoying the sea for the last time, you can easily reach Donoratico train station to come back to Pisa or Florence (leaving the bikes at the hotel) unless you prefer to extend your holiday by relaxing some more days on the coast or discovering the beauty of Elba island.
